Warren
County, a lovely county of farmland and mountains, has about 200
square miles of countryside and 10 square miles that form the Town
of Front Royal. Because of the ease of travel along the length of
the Valley in Warren, the county has been an important north-south
transportation route for hundreds of years and continues to be a
draw for tourists, developers, and hikers. Read on for more on the
Virginia Byway Program, a campaign to keep Walmart from building
a new superstore, a new comprehensive plan, and an update on a huge
potential housing development near Happy Creek.
Stretch
of 340 Designated Scenic Byway
The
rolling hills and rural beauty alongside 340, from route 619 in
Warren to the Page County line, have officially been given Scenic
Byway status by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The Scenic
340 Project worked with the state government over the last several
months to complete the process. The Page County portion of the road
has been submitted and is awaiting approval.
The
Virginia Department of Transportation's Virginia Byway Program allows
localities to participate in the National Scenic Byway Program.
Currently, there are more than 2,700 miles of roads designated as
Virginia Byways, but several hundred more miles of Commonwealth
roadway could qualify.
You can submit a stretch of road to be designated a Scenic Byway:

Battle Won Against Walmart
In
late April, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled in favor of Save
our Gateway, and the zoning battle was won. The land at the
corner of Route 522 and Route 55 will revert to R-1 residential
zoning, and Wal-mart has scrapped its plans for a new store in the
area. Save
our Gateway plans to further protect the area through a conservation
easement or other preservation tool. Learn
