Context Sensitive Solutions

Scenic 340 believes that by requiring VDOT to use Context Sensitive Solutions, we can provide for the future mobility in our region, protect our valuable historic and environmental heritage, and adhere to the Warren and Page County Comprehensive Plans for maintaining rural character. We are working with VDOT to permanently adopt a policy for implementing the CSS process for road construction and are planning CSS workshops for the Valley.

On November 16 2005, Trip Pollard, a member of the Southern Environmental Law Center, presented on CSS to the Commonwealth Transportation Board. VDOT is developing an internal policy to meet the first requirement for receiving FHWA recognition of VA as a state with a context sensitive design approach to road planning. Members of the CTB said they hope to make Virginia a "CSS state" in the next three to six months.
