The
Shenandoah Valley Network links community groups working on land
protection, land use and transportation issues in seven counties:
Frederick, Warren, Shenandoah, Page, Rockingham, Augusta and Highland.
Mission:
Our mission is to support each group as they promote appropriate
growth that will protect traditional towns, rural land uses and
natural, cultural and historic resources. We promote economic development
and managed growth that does not stress town or county infrastructure,
increase the burden of property taxes or destroy resources critical
to the quality of life and the agriculture, forestry and tourism
sectors of the economy.
Shenandoah
Valley Network staff and experts from across the state provide hands-on
technical assistance to members in such areas as transportation
and land use planning, grassroots organizing, media outreach and
building the capacity of county-level community groups.
We
provide leadership on major regional campaigns and take stands on
specific regional issues, which are always brought to us by our
members.
Our
current regional campaigns:
I-81:
Block plans for a $13 billion truckway and promote affordable, lower-impact
improvements, within the existing roadway, to address safety and
congestion problems.
PDRs:
Secure a state-level dedicated funding source for county
programs to purchase development rights.
Context
Sensitive Solutions (CSS): Require VDOT to utilize context
sensitive design principles in planning for new roads or road improvements
and educate local governments about this option.
Land
Protection: Ensure state-level support for private land
protection in the Shenandoah Valley; notably the Virginia Outdoors
Foundation, the Virginia Land Preservation Tax Credit and the Virginia
Land Conservation Foundation.
